Op-Ed: GEO’s work with the state of Florida is creating valuable outcomes for returning citizens

Derrick Schofield, Executive Vice President of Continuum of Care and Reentry for The GEO Group, Inc., highlights how The GEO Group supports Florida’s correctional system by improving quality of life for inmates and reducing recidivism rates in a recent op-ed for South Central Florida Life. He notes how GEO has maintained a public-private partnership with the state for Florida for nearly 30 years, ensuring secure correctional operations and structured rehabilitation programs to support returning citizens.

The piece points out that in 2019 alone, GEO facilities awarded 265 GEDs, achieved 2,155 vocational program completions, and helped ensure 39% of CoC post-release participants gained employment following release on behalf of the state. The partnership between GEO and the state of Florida continues to produce successful outcomes.

Mr. Schofield writes: “These are impressive numbers, but the real difference is in the lives that are positively changed. These results are not possible without dedicated staff that believes in this mission and works every day to make it happen. As a part of Florida’s correctional system, GEO not only wants to ensure that we’re doing everything we can for those entrusted to our care, but we also want to successfully help the state reduce reincarceration rates.” Read more here.
